Will Dark Colored Cabinets Make a Kitchen Look Smaller?

Posted on December 7, 2024

Do dark cabinets make a kitchen look smaller? Dark cabinets, as compared to light ones, are known to be eye-catching. They give the kitchen an atmosphere of mystery and even darkness. In a way, dark makes the kitchen seem bigger.

It is true that lighting can make wonders. However, when you are in the kitchen itself, you cannot afford to lose your attention to lighting. To avoid that, make sure that the kitchen has the right amount of natural light. If you have inadequate lighting in the kitchen, either put up some artificial lights or play it safe and use only a small number of bulbs so as not to reduce the brightness in the kitchen.

Another thing that you should pay attention to is the placement of appliances in the kitchen. Placing items that use more electric power close to the stove would mean you use more electricity. If you want to make your kitchen look more streamlined, place cooking utensils and appliances where they will have less to do with heating up the kitchen. For example, you might want to set your refrigerator next to the oven so you do not need to open the refrigerator door to check the food.

The lighting in the kitchen should also be adequate. You would want your eyes to be fixed on the ingredients and not on the wall clock or the knobs and handles of your appliances. Take note of the corners of your kitchen. Do you find that there are parts of the room which are illuminated better than the rest of the room?

Does more counter space equal a smaller kitchen? Absolutely not! As stated earlier, having a smaller kitchen does not necessarily mean you have to have a smaller kitchen design. In fact, it could mean having more countertop area to work with.

Does more cabinet space mean a bigger kitchen? Again, it all depends upon the size of the kitchen and what you plan to store in it. If you only have room for a few small appliances like your toaster, it does not mean you have to get a whole new kitchen. A small refrigerator could do the trick and you do not even need to buy new cabinets. If you have a spacious kitchen, you can consider getting new drawers, cupboards, pantries and shelves in order to make the most out of your kitchen and do dark cabinets make a kitchen look smaller?

There is no way you can know for sure if cabinets will look smaller or larger in your kitchen. Your kitchen may already look too small and you may have to rebuild or remodel part of it. The kitchen is one place that is always used so it would be wise to at least give it the remodel that is needed. If you are trying to save space and make your kitchen look bigger, then you would have to replace or build new cabinets.

You have to realize that there are factors that will determine how big or small your kitchen looks. It has nothing to do with how many cabinets you have. What matters most is the overall design of your kitchen? It should have an appealing layout and color that would make your kitchen look bigger than it actually is.

When you have a smaller kitchen, you would need to maximize every inch of that space. This means that you have to include more countertop area. More countertop space would mean that you can prepare food faster. It also means that your kitchen would look cleaner. Dark cabinets could prevent the formation of bacteria and mold in your kitchen, which could pose a serious threat to you and your family. With less space to move about, you would be forced to do a lot of things slower which will in turn make your kitchen look slower as well.

A countertop is also wasted space that you should not waste. Even with the best of kitchen designs, a large countertop would still make your kitchen look cramped and messy. Instead, you should opt for smaller plates and cups and proper utensils to spice up your kitchen. You can save a lot of space by opting for functional items over flashy ones. Even better, you should opt for cutting-edge kitchen designs that would allow you to get the most out of every inch of space in your kitchen.

These are just a few reasons why a kitchen should look bigger. Dark cabinets would surely help you attain these goals and make your kitchen look like what it is supposed to be. However, having dark cabinets would also come at a price. You would have to spend more for these types of kitchen makeovers as compared to lighter ones. But with the quality and the design that you can get from a professional, you would definitely be thankful that you decided to do the kitchen makeover.
